Chuck Lessard electrified one of my Gambler kits with a speed 280 direct drive and a 4.7x2.7 graupner folding prop. Flew great. To get the battery and motor to fit he enlarged the pod. Hi T, Sounds good, how about that direct drive set that guy's using? I'm using LiPo's for my indoor planes, 700 mAh at about 35 grams (1,2 oz) so... e-bug 45 min's flying time!?! How about gliding with this weight? I think it might be possible to put the LiPo pack in the wing somehow, i haven't build a bug yet so I'm not sure about the dimensions. The link in this group doesn't take me to the plan, can't find it on the web either. Just noticed a sweet thing for this "project": http://www.aeromicro.com/Catalog/planetary_gearbox__2_0_g__with_5_1_g ear_ratio_1247318.htm Don't know if they ship to the Netherlands though. Probably a bit expensive for just one of these. So next is indeed to find that folder prop. The normal ones I use on parkflyers are to heavy, I think I've seen someone who turned a GWS Slowfly prop into a folder. Worth a try. Richard - Never done that, but I've wondered, so I think that sounds like something worthwhile before the spring. Motocalc didn't mind the following combination, assuming the weight without the motor or the battery / esc is around 3 oz. I used the wing area from the plans, no extensions, etc. GWS DX2BB Geared 3.5:1 spinning a 7x6 prop (i'd like to find a folding prop that fit that motor) GWS ICS ESC (.17) oz A RadioShack 8.4V 150 mAh nimh cell (about 1 oz) That theoretically gives hands off level flight speeds of 15 - 20 MPH, and run times at around 10 minutes given 75% throttle. I haven't graduated to Li-Poly yet. That's about 4.5 oz wing loading with the motor. I may give it a try (on my third bug after the one in progress). I suspect a wider / deeper POD would be helpful for the motorized version. Thanks for posting that link - very nice.
