Subject: Re: Bug Airfoil - Selig 7014
Hi Night Owl,
Hahaha ok ill explain a little more. When i was redrawing the bug plan i was not sure what the actual airfoil was, so i went through about 50 odd airfoils and came across the Selig 8040 which looked spot on so i assumed that this was the original bug airfoil.
John then corrected me stating that the original bug airfoil was actually a Selig 3014.
Out of curiosity i over laid the two trying to find the difference. Because when i over laid the airfoil i drew off of the bug plan i was like a glove to hand with the Selig 8040.
Here is a picture of the actual difference of the two airfoils (Selig 8040 vs Selig 3014)
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/BugHLG/photos/album/520307090/pic/604985041/view?picmode=original&mode=tn&order=ordinal&start=1&dir=asc
So really the difference between the two is marginal i feel sorry for the guy that made these as i am very sure he would have lost what was what!!!! Hahahaha
So in this picture it shows the airfoil i drew off of the bug plan (in pink) laid over a Selig 8040
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/BugHLG/photos/album/520307090/pic/1466294142/view?picmode=original&mode=tn&order=ordinal&start=1&dir=asc
But like you said once the good old hand sanding happens im sure they will change a bit!
Kind Regards
Alan

Alan,
'Fraid you lost me here. (I am easily confused!) Is this the Selig 8040 laid atop the airfoil used for The Bug, or the Selig 8040 over the Selid 3014? (Because I don't see enough difference to BE a difference, when you consider my hand-sanding the finished wing.)

With the airfoil this thin, subribs would be mandatory.

Let us compare apples to apples. Here's a comparison of S3014 vs AG37, both at the same thickness -7.74%.
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/BugHLG/photos/album/1385485793/pic/1344587143/view?picmode=&mode=tn&order=ordinal&start=21&count=20&dir=asc
One good feature about the AG37 is the thickness at the trailing part of the airfoil. It's thicker so won't be so likely to break.
So I give a yah to the AG37.
Just so everyone understands. This is going to be a big gamble. What we really need is someone to build one with the AG37 airfoil and see if it will even work. One possible problem is that the fabric will wind up resting against the spar in the valleys between the ribs. This would kill it.
Squid,
Seems like you are about there, so suggest that you put both the rib patterns for the original thick airfoil (S3014) and the AG37 rib patterns on the plan.
Just to hedge our bets.
We still need a name. I suggested Bugger. Anyone else suggest a name?
John

Sorry do you mean. Go to the AG38 airfoil or you are keen on the AG37?

Guy's:
I would like to suggest that templates could be made for the S3014,S8040 and even thr Drela foils as time and ambition allows.
{of course its easy for me to suggest since it is not my time and effort }
Then we could build spare wings and test differences real time as change over would amount to removing one bolt.
I have been using balsa from my scrap box for my build {still lots left}and purchased enough carbon [1/8] for a couple of bugs so I am ready
Thanks for all the contributions !
Mike

Sorry - Slipped into Social Media speak there.
+1 means I'm also in support of this direction. A trendy way of saying " I agree", "Me, too!", "Ditto", etc.

Sorry guys. It's is S3014 not S7014. This is a very popular airfoil for builtup gliders. Almost all of the Skybench gliders are S3014.

The UIUC database has coordinates for the Selig 7012. It looks pretty close.

Sorry Squid. It's s3014. Most of the Selig airfoils look similar so you can't compare them by eye.
