Subject: Re: Bug Redesign
Hey John. I'm still here. Not building or flying lately due to losing our field to the soccer hooligans. I've been itching to do another build and this thread popped up. I'm in when the plans are finished. I called my small plane the L'il Bugger since it was a hybrid of the Little Nipper and the Bug. I also built a 48" Bug hybrid that I really enjoyed. I'll add a photo to the photos section of this group as a reminder. I still have this plane. It is no longer prepped for flying, but I keep it as a memento of flying with my boys who are now grown (staring to feel old...) As far as airfoils go, I think we get a little too wound up on design. Unless you are laser cutting, you're going to have some variation anyway and the Bug's wing by design has a massively varying airfoil due to construction method. My version with the Drela foils had half ribs and flew quite well. I watch the goofballs on the liftzone DLG boards beat each other up over really esoteric details and laugh. I say: Build something and go flying! Cheers! Looking forward to hacking out a new Bug after many years!!! It was mentioned that the basics of most DLG's are similar, just named differently. This should be the same as long and you leave out the copyrighted name. You could even have a naming contest on this list with the winner getting the first set of plans! > > > > I scratch built a bug hybrid years ago as my first solo build and it was a blast. My kids couldn't even break it. It had the longer spars, extra rib, cruciform tail, etc. My only two cents to add is that I'd stay away from pultruded CF booms as they tend to be heavy and the small OD still leaves them kind of whippy for SAL or DLG launching. My favorite has always been the Skyshark 2P. > > > > Sign me up for a tiled PDF when you are done! > > > > Thanks again, > > > > Chris in Seattle > > >
