Subject: Re: Bug Redesign
Hey John. I'm still here. Not building or flying lately due to losing our field to the soccer hooligans. I've been itching to do another build and this thread popped up. I'm in when the plans are finished. I called my small plane the L'il Bugger since it was a hybrid of the Little Nipper and the Bug. I also built a 48" Bug hybrid that I really enjoyed. I'll add a photo to the photos section of this group as a reminder. I still have this plane. It is no longer prepped for flying, but I keep it as a memento of flying with my boys who are now grown (staring to feel old...) As far as airfoils go, I think we get a little too wound up on design. Unless you are laser cutting, you're going to have some variation anyway and the Bug's wing by design has a massively varying airfoil due to construction method. My version with the Drela foils had half ribs and flew quite well. I watch the goofballs on the liftzone DLG boards beat each other up over really esoteric details and laugh. I say: Build something and go flying! Cheers! Looking forward to hacking out a new Bug after many years!!! Chris, The drela airfoils get their superior performance because of their use of increased percentage of  leading edge sheeting on both the top and bottom of the airfoil.  The top needs about 50% and the bottom about 30%.  They wouldn't produce the extra performance with the Bug's no sheeting wing structure.    Without the sheeting you are just as well off with a thinned Selig 7014.   John ________________________________ From: raincityflyer <lewis08@...> To: BugHLG@yahoogroups.com Sent: Thursday, March 1, 2012 11:55 AM Subject: [BugHLG] Re: Bug Airfoil - Selig/Donovan SD8040   I've had good luck with Drela's AG 35-38 airfoils as they are flat bottomed and faceted on top for balsa construction and iron-on covering. No worries about airfoil fidelity when you try to get your covering to stick to concave surfaces. Cheers! Chris, Hi. It's good to hear from raincityflier. Reminds me of the early days of the Little Nipper design. You are probably right about the name change. Would you mind if I submitted your modified Bug's name for this? You called your Bug/Nipper the Bugger. Would the group consider calling the new design's name the Bugger? Any other suggestions? The skyshark 2p was great but unfortunately Skyshark went out of business and it's not available anymore. Squid/John/All - Happy to see the effort put into formalizing all of the mod's generated over the years. RCM probably owns the rights (not Carl unfortunately). If you have the original plans you see that the airfoil is the Selig 7014.  This is a very popular airfoil. My suggistion was to reduce the thickness to  around 8%.   John ________________________________ From: Squid <littlefr2003@...> To: BugHLG@yahoogroups.com Sent: Thursday, March 1, 2012 1:22 AM Subject: [BugHLG] Bug Airfoil - Selig/Donovan SD8040   Hi Guys, another question. Any airfoil that keeps it in the air for a while is one on I look for. On Thu, Mar 1, 2012 at 12:22 AM, Squid <littlefr2003@...> wrote: > Hi Guys, another question.
