Hi dimple-kwok, Shouldn't be embarasing at all. There's a lot to be learned in the compostites field. There are a number of sites that do a pretty good job (with picture and text) of explaining composites of all types: C/F, F/G, Kevlar, etc. Here's one link to The Composite Store: https://www.cstsales.com/home.htm You can find a few more good links under Composites, in the Links section at: www.rclanding.com hth, Mark ----- Original Message ----- From: "dimple_kwok" <henry.kwok@...> To: <BugHLG@yahoogroups.com> Sent: Monday, September 01, 2003 3:48 AM Subject: [BugHLG] Some silly questions... > This question has been bugging me a long time and I have been too > embarrassed to ask. Carbon fibre is black in colour, fibreglass is normally white. Carbon fibre is considerably stronger than fibreglass and more expensive weight-for-weight. The engineer's theory of bending shows that, when used as a spar, a tube can carry almost the same weight as a solid rod for a substantial weight saving. If you sand a carbon rod you should get a fine black powder (don't breathe it in), with fibreglass it will normally be a fairly coarse white powder with what appears to be little fibres in it. This question has been bugging me a long time and I have been too embarrassed to ask. What is the difference between carbon fiber and fiberglass? I can I tell? Which one is heavier? Is tube better than solid rod for wing spar? I guess it must be lighter and more rigid? I suspect my solid rod spar is actually fiberglass although I don't know enough to tell.
